Porn Jobs

The year was 2006. I was a straight male in my early twenties. I was living in the porn capital of the United States (the San Fernando Valley), and I had one primary goal in life: to find out what porn jobs were available and get my foot in the door of the porn industry. A late-bloomer, sexually (I didn’t lose my virginity until I was 20), I became fascinated by the whole sex industry: first, frankly, by prostitutes. So you’re telling me that I struggled for four years or so to lose my virginity, when all I had to do is pay a damn hooker to come over and fuck me, whenever I wanted!? I was enthralled.

Shortly thereafter, I fell in love with strip clubs. In particular, I spent a LOT of time and money at Xposed & The Wet Spot in Canoga Park. This den of iniquity consists of a full liquor store, a full-nude strip club, and a full bar/bikini bar, all on a single property, in a single building, but all with separate entrances, to comply with laws on liquor & strippers & so forth.

Finally, I realized that I was living in the capital of the United States porn industry. That’s when I got the idea to start looking into porn jobs. What if I could make a living by working in the sex industry? How fucking awesome would that be!

 

Porn Jobs That I’ve Had (or Have)

 

DVD Salesman

(an endangered species of porn jobs)

Back in my day, there was no Zip Recruiter or Monster.com; we had these things called “newspapers.” They were daily-updated “stacks” of paper, available for sale in metal boxes around town. In each newspaper was a “job postings” section. I scoured them looking for one sweet, specific, magic phrase: “adult film.” This led to my first of many porn jobs, working as a DVD salesman for a low-budget porn producer.

My employer was the owner/operator of the company, and he was also the producer & director of his very low-budget porn movies. My job was to call up adult DVD stores around the country & pitch our newest releases. I was the producer’s one & only employee, working straight-commission, and I was earning less than $100 a week. And I did NOT care because I had finally made it! I KNEW that my foot was now in the door of the industry that I wanted to be a part of so badly, an industry that I will be a part of until the day I die. (The less than $100 a week certainly wasn’t pleasant, but I was overjoyed to finally be an official part of the porn industry.)

Although there are still a few porno DVD salesmen on staff at some major porn studios, those with this job title are a dying breed. The internet has all but wiped out DVD sales across the board, including porno DVDs.

 

Talent Manager

In 2006, our parent Company was already a thriving, successful talent management firm of Hollywood screen actors for films, television series & TV commercials. At that time, we decided to open our adult film industry division to manage new & up-and-coming pornstars. As the second of my porn jobs, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to provide advice, counsel, promotion & general talent management services to countless male & female adult film performers.

Many of my contract models have been able to achieve high levels of success in the industry, gracing the covers of both Penthouse & Hustler magazines, crossing over into mainstream Hollywood feature films, starring in AVN-award winning movies, running their successful pornstar websites and (most importantly) earning up to $5,000 – $6,000 / week within their very first week or so in the industry.

Many might imagine the job of porn model talent manager to be glamourous. They’re not wrong (it is a pretty awesome gig), but it’s also a lot of hard work, especially when working with beginner performers, as I always have. At least half of my job is playing detective, figuring out who’s serious (with contract model applicants, as well as with those claiming to be producers, directors, photographers, etc., with interest in booking my models), and who’s just curious (or worse). Who’s worth investing time, energy & money into, and who do I need to tell to fuck off?

I have to be available for urgent phone calls when my performers are on set or traveling out of state for bookings. That frequently means being available overnight. I need to educate, answer questions, and clear up miscommunications or misunderstandings between producers & my performers. I need to be loving & kind, but also direct and straight-forward… “you need to start cutting carbs,” or “you need to see a dermatologist about those stretch marks, or nobody’s going to book you,” or “you need to adjust your sexual character… you’re fuckin’ boring… a sex doll has more energy than you“. Thankfully, it’s not all negative, and it’s often, “hey… we got some great feedback from the producer… you nailed it. Great job!” Either way, I need to be able to get the message across.

 

Photographer

For many years, our talent management Company would hire a professional photographer to come in and shoot our models’ promotional photos each time we’d onboard a new performer. Although we’ve worked with some talented photographers, the scheduling & deal-making process was sometimes a bit of a difficulty.

In recent years, we’ve found that it’s much easier to secure our own equipment & shoot our own photos. Who knows better the exact type of pictures that producers & casting directors are looking for than me? This has led to my studying some fundamentals of photography equipment & shooting techniques, as well as photo touch-up & editing.

 

Videographer

I’m proud to produce my own adult film movies and to have done so for the vast majority of my time in the industry. Doing so has allowed me to learn so much about videography, video editing, color balancing, lighting & more.

 

Pornstar

(the most desired of all porn jobs)

Of course, I had to save the best (or – at least – what is undisputedly the most exciting & most desired of all) of my porn jobs for last. For the vast majority of my career in the porn industry, I have performed in front of the camera with countless other performers. Yes, I am a pornstar, and damn proud of it!

The porn industry is not one of those industries that people wind up in by accident; it’s always intentional. If we’re being honest, what initially attracts all men (gay, straight or bisexual) and most women to the porn industry is this: the unadulterated sensual pleasure of hot, steamy, casual, condomless sex with clean, tested & attractive partners, all as a paid occupation!

In the greatest country on Earth, the United States of America, porn production with consenting adults is – for the most part – completely legal. For your average red-blooded male, and for many sex-loving females as well, NO job on the face of the Earth has more appeal.
